Figure 1 illustrates the safeMedicate healthcare professional pathway model. The model has three entry points for the healthcare professional:

  1. Entry Point 1: Essential Skills Authentic Assessment (AA): This assessment is used to evaluate the healthcare professional’s integrated Essential Skills competence under virtual simulated clinical conditions. If errors are detected it is advised that the healthcare professional is exposed to an Authentic Diagnostic Assessment (ADA), to diagnose the origins of the error (conceptual, calculation or technical measurement error) and subsequently following skills remediation, if necessary in the Essential Skills Learning Environment/Foundation Numeracy Assessment (FNA) is then re-assessed in the Authentic Assessment (AA) environment. Essential Skills Authentic Assessment (AA) is the minimum baseline competence assessment for all healthcare professionals and a 100% performance level should be achieved prior to undertaking the more complex Advanced Pediatric Authentic Assessment or the Advanced Injectable Medicine Infusion Assessment.
  2. Entry Point 2: Advanced Pediatric Authentic Assessment: This assessment is used to evaluate the healthcare professional’s pediatric body-weight based single dose and 24-hour divided dose medication dosage calculation problem-solving skills. If errors are detected it is advised that the healthcare professional is exposed to an Advanced Pediatric Authentic Diagnostic Assessment, to diagnose the origins of the error (conceptual, calculation or technical measurement error) and subsequently following skills remediation, if necessary in the Pediatric Learning Environment is then re-assessed in the Advanced Pediatric Authentic Assessment environment.
  3. Entry Point 3: Advanced Injectable Medicine Infusion Authentic Assessment: This assessment is used to evaluate the healthcare professional’s Advanced Injectable Medicine Intermittent and Continuous Infusion calculation & problem-solving skills. If errors are detected it is advised that the healthcare professional is exposed to an Advanced Skills Authentic Diagnostic Assessment, to diagnose the origins of the error (conceptual, calculation or technical measurement error) and subsequently following skills remediation, if necessary in the Advanced Skills Learning Environment, is then re-assessed in the Advanced Injectable Medicine Infusion Authentic Assessment environment.
