safeMedicate Essential Skills Undergraduate Curriculum Design

Figure 1 illustrates the safeMedicate medication dosage calculation problem-solving curriculum for USA & Canada undergraduate nursing students (see the Safety in Numbers series for underpinning & background research). The curriculum is designed to systematically develop and assess cognitive competence (knowledge) in medication dosage calculation problem solving and to sensitize the student to the essential functional competence (know-how & skills) requirements of clinical medication dosage calculation competence. Development and assessment of Foundation Numeracy, Essential Skills & Essential Word Problem Skills for LPN and RN students acts as a foundation for subsequent development and assessment of more complex Body-weight based Pediatric, Injectable Medicines & Advanced Word Problem skills. The curriculum is informed by a program of research undertaken by a USA & international interdisciplinary expert healthcare numeracy reference group (see Safety in Numbers 5).
