safeMedicate Essential Skills Undergraduate Curriculum Design

Fig 1 (Click image to open in new window/tab)

Figure 1 illustrates the safeMedicate Essential Skills medication dosage calculation problem-solving curriculum for UK undergraduate nursing students (see the Safety in Numbers series & Safety in Numbers 6 for underpinning & background research). The curriculum is designed to systematically develop, assess & integrate cognitive (knowledge) and functional (know-how & skills) medication dosage calculation competence throughout the three-year undergraduate programme. The curriculum framework is informed by the medicines calculations component of the NMC (2010a) revised Essential Skills Cluster (ESC 33) for Medicines Management, available online at (p.32) and the NMC (2010b) Advice & Supporting Information for implementing NMC standards for pre-registration nursing education, available online at (p.60). The NMC (2010) revised ESC 33 was itself part informed by a programme of research undertaken by a NHS Education for Scotland (NES) commissioned Authentic World Ltd and UK interdisciplinary expert healthcare numeracy reference group (see Safety in Numbers 5).
