The Authentic Diagnostic Assessment (ADA) is used throughout the three-year undergraduate Essential Skills Program to diagnose the progressive development, integration and assessment of Essential Skills medication dosage calculation: conceptual competence, calculation competence & technical measurement competence and in combination with the Essential Skills Learning Environment is used to correct any diagnosed errors. Figure 1a, 1b & 1c illustrate examples from the Authentic Diagnostic Assessment (ADA):

  • Figure 1a illustrates diagnosis of correct problem-solving processing for all three domains of: conceptual competence, calculation competence & technical measurement competence.
  • Figure 1b illustrates diagnosis of a conceptual (equation set-up) error and resultant calculation error & technical measurement error… the student has incorrectly set-up the equation resulting in a four-fold overdose.
  • Figure 1c illustrates diagnosis of an arithmetical operation error & resultant technical measurement error… the student has incorrectly divided the numerator (10mg) into the denominator (20mg) resulting in a four-fold overdose.
