The safeMedicate® Competence Development and Error Diagnosis Pathway (USA and Canada)

The safeMedicate® Competence Development and Error Diagnosis Pathway. The pathway is designed to develop and assess cognitive competence (knowledge) in the medication dosage calculation problem-solving process (MDCPS); and to sensitize healthcare students and practitioners to the general principles underpinning the functional competence (know-how and skilled performance) requirements of medication dosage calculation problem-solving in clinical practice. The pathway is designed for entry at various points by:

  • Undergraduate healthcare students (See figure 1)
  • Registered healthcare practitioners (see Figure 2)

All healthcare students enter the pathway at the base of the Essential Skills pathway and follow a linear path through:

  • ESSENTIAL SKILLS: For LPN & RN students:
  • Diagnostic Numeracy Assessment (DNA): this evaluates start-point basic numeracy competence at the point of selection or commencement of the undergraduate program.
  • Essential Skills Learning Environment: this supports learning of essential MDCPS skills.
  • Essential Skills Authentic Diagnostic Assessment: this diagnoses phased development of cognitive competence in essential MDCPS skills.
  • Essential Skills Authentic Assessment: this is the final evaluation of development of cognitive competence in essential MDCPS skills, prior to study of Advanced MDCPS skills (for RN students) or preparation for licensure examinations (for LPN students).
  • Essential Word Problem Skills: this supports development of skills for solving typical essential word-based MDCPS problems used in licensure examinations (e.g., NCLEX-PN) and pre-employment selection tests.
  • ADVANCED SKILLS: For RN students:
  • Advanced Skills Pediatric Body Weight Based MDCPS Skills/Injectable Medicine Infusion MDCPS Learning Zones: these support learning of advanced MDCPS skills.
  • Advanced Skills Authentic Diagnostic Assessment: this diagnoses phased development of cognitive competence in advanced MDCPS skills.
  • Advanced Skills Authentic Assessment: this is the final evaluation of development of cognitive competence in advanced MDCPS skills, prior to preparation for licensure examinations (for RN students).
  • Essential Word Problem Skills: this supports development of skills for solving typical essential and advanced word-based MDCPS problems used in licensure examinations (e.g., NCLEX-RN) and pre-employment selection tests.

Registered practitioners enter the pathway at two potential points:

  • ENTRY POINT 1:
  • Essential Skills Authentic Assessment: this is the minimum benchmark of achievement of cognitive competence in essential MDCPS skills. It is recommended that all registered practitioners are assessed for competence at this level (and any necessary remediation undertaken via engaging with the Essential Skills Authentic Diagnostic Assessment & Learning Zones) prior to study of Advanced MDCPS skills.
  • ENTRY POINT 2:
  • Advanced Skills Authentic Assessment: Pediatric Body Weight Based MDCPS Skills/Injectable Medicine Infusion MDCPS: this is the minimum benchmark of achievement of cognitive competence in advanced MDCPS skills. Where errors are committed it is recommended that any necessary remediation is undertaken via engaging with the Advanced Skills Authentic Diagnostic Assessment & Learning Zones.
